Citations vs mentions: what actually counts as AI visibility

Quick answer

A mention is your brand named anywhere in an AI answer. A recommendation is your brand named as the suggested choice. A citation is a source the answer appears to draw on, named or linked. Reporting one as if it were another distorts the picture, so define and track all three separately.

Key takeaways

  • Mention, recommendation and citation measure different things.
  • A high mention rate with few citations means you are talked about, not sourced from.
  • Report all three separately, each with its own denominator.

Three words that get used interchangeably

Teams often report 'we were mentioned 40% of the time' as if it settles the question of AI visibility. It settles one part of it. Three distinct things get called visibility, and they do not move together.

What each term measures
TermWhat it meansWhy it matters
MentionYour brand's name appears anywhere in the answer, favourably or notShows awareness. Says nothing about endorsement or accuracy
RecommendationYour brand is named as the suggested or best option for the question askedCloser to a buying decision, and far rarer than a plain mention
CitationA source is named or linked that the answer appears to draw onShows which pages a system treats as authoritative enough to use

Why the gap between them matters

A brand can be mentioned often while being cited rarely, which usually means the model already 'knows' the brand from training data but does not trust, or cannot find, a current page to pull facts from. The fix for that gap is not the same as the fix for a low mention rate: it is about giving retrieval something recent and citeable, not about getting named more.

Report the mix, not one number

A single 'visibility score' hides which of the three problems you actually have. Break it out by platform and by prompt group before deciding what to fix.
Can a brand be cited without being mentioned by name?

Yes. Some answers link or name a source without using the brand's name in the visible text. Track citations by domain, not only by brand name appearing in prose.

Which of the three matters most for revenue?

Recommendation sits closest to a purchase decision, but citation often explains why a recommendation happened or did not, so the two are usually read together.

How we work

Figures are dated and linked to their sources. Where none exist we say so. Read our methodology and AI transparency pages.

Start with a first audit. We show where you appear, who is named instead, and what to fix first.
