Quick answer
FAQPage, HowTo and Product schema describe content in a machine-readable form that both search features and AI systems can parse more reliably than prose alone. None of them guarantee inclusion in an answer, but each removes ambiguity about what a page is, which reduces the chance a fact gets misread.
Key takeaways
- Schema removes ambiguity. It does not buy placement in any answer.
- Only mark up content that is visible on the page in the same form.
- Keep marked-up facts, such as price or steps, in sync with the visible page or risk being flagged as misleading.
Which type to use, and when
| Type | Use it on | What it clarifies |
|---|---|---|
| FAQPage | A page with real, visible question and answer pairs | That a passage is a direct answer to a specific question, not general prose |
| HowTo | A page that walks through a sequence of steps to a result | The order and count of steps, separate from surrounding explanation |
| Product | A page describing a specific product or plan with a price | Price, availability and identifying details, in a consistent machine-readable shape |
How to apply it without creating a mismatch
- 1Write the FAQ, steps or product facts as real visible content first. Markup describes the page, it does not replace it.
- 2Match every marked-up field exactly to what a reader sees, including price and currency.
- 3Validate the markup with a structured data testing tool before publishing.
- 4Update the markup the same moment the visible fact changes, in the same commit or edit.
- 5Remove schema for content that no longer exists on the page, rather than leaving it stale.
Markup is not magic
Will adding schema guarantee we get cited?
No platform documents schema as a guarantee of citation. Treat it as removing ambiguity, not as a ranking lever.
Should every page have FAQ schema?
Only pages with real, visible FAQs. Marking up content that is not actually visible on the page risks being treated as misleading.
