Eligible observation
Also known as: denominator
Definition
An eligible observation is an answer that is relevant to the brand and topic being measured, and therefore counts in the denominator of a rate.
Why it matters
Dividing by every answer, including irrelevant ones, distorts results. Using only eligible observations keeps rates honest.
Example
An answer about a different product category is excluded from a brand's mention rate.
